Manual Therapy

Osteopathy is, according to the World Health Organization, relies on manual contact with techniques for assessment and treatment. It respects the relationship of body, mind, and spirit in health and disease; it lays emphasis on the structural and functional integrity of the body and the body’s intrinsic tendency for self-healing.

Manual Osteopathy Practitioners (DOMP) or Manual Therapists use a wide variety of therapeutic manual techniques to improve physiological function and/or support homeostasis that has been altered by somatic (body framework) dysfunction, i.e. impaired or altered function of related components of the somatic system; skeletal, arthrodial and myofascial structures; and related vascular, lymphatic, and neural elements. They use their understanding of the relationship between structure and function to optimize the body’s self-regulating, self-healing capabilities.

This holistic approach to client care and healing is based on the concept that a human being is a dynamic functional unit, in which all parts are interrelated and which possesses its own self-regulatory and self-healing mechanisms. One essential component of osteopathic health care is osteopathic manual therapy, typically called osteopathic manual techniques (OMT), which refers to an array of tissue mobilization techniques that may be combined with other treatments or advice, for example on diet, physical activity, and posture, or counseling.

This field is one of the fastest-growing health fields in Australia and the world alike. The number of people choosing to visit a manual osteopathy Practitioner for treatment has increased by 270% since 2012.

Manual Osteopathy/ Manual Therapists or Practitioners in Canada and the US do not offer a medical diagnosis, that is the domain of a medical doctor and are not registered with the College and Physicians and Surgeons in Canada; however, are an integral part of complementary health care, both in rural and metropolitan areas.

    Soothes inflammation and pain

Hot Stone Massage:

  • While there are a myriad of different massage techniques, one of the most popular – for good reason – is hot stone massage.

In a hot stone massage, both warm and hot stones are positioned in formation on the body, as well as being used as a massage tool. It’s the contrast of hot and cold temperatures that force the muscles to dilate and contract, creating a pumping action for moving fresh fluids through muscles tissue and spaces in the joints. The specific placement of stones have been associated with organ detoxification, and increased circulation.

The stones, typically river rocks or other smooth-surfaced stones made of basalt for their heat-retaining properties, are heated and kept warm before application. In some cases, cold stones can be used to stroke the body after the application of hot stones in order to reduce swelling and pain, or to stimulate lymphatic drainage.

From physical to mental, there are many health benefits associated with hot stone massage, including:

Muscle relaxation – the heat from the stones helps tight, stiff muscles to relax, which allows the massage therapist to manipulate the deep muscle tissue more effectively.

Pain Relief – a hot stone massage may provide greater relief of pain caused by tense muscles, stiff joints, or injuries because, as mentioned above, the heat from the stones allows the therapist’s actions to penetrate deeper. It’s important to note, however, that pain and discomfort during the massage can cause more harm than good, so please advise your masseuse if their pressure or technique is too much for you.

Improve Circulation – typically, heated stones are rested on trigger points on your body before beginning the massage. As the heat from the stones penetrates into your deeper tissues, it causes blood vessels to open, resulting in improved circulation. Poor circulation has been associated with fatigue, which can create tension in the muscles, and a build-up of lactic acid.

Mental benefits – the relaxation afforded by a hot stone massage may help ease mental stress and tension, as well as help combat some symptoms of anxiety disorders and depression. Though massage therapy is not a substitute for traditional medicine or care, it can be an integral, indulgent part of your treatment.

Better Sleep – as it can be hard to get good quality sleep when your mind and body are over fatigued, the relaxation provided through hot stone therapy may make it easier for you to fall into the deeper sleep your body needs to recover from daily stresses.

As with any treatment, it is recommended you check with your doctor or health care practitioner before your first treatment. Individuals with certain conditions, including pregnant women and those with high blood pressure, are advised to avoid this type of therapy.

Lymphatic Drainage Massage

What is Lymphatic Drainage Massage?

Your lymphatic system helps eliminate your body’s waste. A healthy, active lymphatic system uses the natural movements of smooth muscle tissue to do this.

However, surgery, medical conditions, or other damage can cause fluids to build up in your lymph system and your lymph nodes, a condition known as lymphedema.

If you’ve ever had a surgery on or involving your lymph nodes, your doctor may have suggested lymphatic drainage massage performed by a certified massage or physical therapist. However,

Lymphatic massage is not recommended for people with the following conditions:

  • Congestive heart failure
  • History of blood clots or stroke
  • Current infection
  • Liver problems
  • Kidney problems
  • Lymphedema

Procedures that affect or remove your lymph nodes can cause lymphedema as a side effect.

Lymphedema will only occur in the area near a surgical site.

For example, if you have lymph nodes removed as a part of cancer surgery to your left breast, only your left arm, not your right, might be affected with lymphedema.

Lymphedema can also occur as a result of an injury or medical conditions such as congestive heart failure (CHF) or blood clots in the body

Cupping Session

Cupping Therapy is a modified version of the common practice of cupping, used in traditional Chinese medicine. Cupping Massage will help break down rigid tissue (muscle and fascia), and assists in the release of excess fluids and toxins. It also promotes blood flow and can helps improve range of motion.

The process involves the therapist putting special cups on your skin for a few minutes to create suction. The process uses negative pressure (suction) to lift the soft tissues of the body. This is “not” fire cupping. Generally patients get cupping for many purposes, including to help with pain, inflammation, blood flow, relaxation and well-being, and as a type of deep-tissue massage. After your session, the cups may leave bruise or bruise-like marks on your treated areas, the colour and pattern of the marks depend on the level of stagnation in the area, and can range from a bright red to a dark purple, usually lasting 3 days to a week, sometimes a bit longer. Once clients understand what these marks are, and feel the results, their concerns disappear, and they return for more sessions. Cups can be made out of silicone, rubber, glass, or even bamboo and can be left in place or moved along the body. Each session can last between 30-50 minutes depending on the area in which requires treatment.
